is Trichomonas Vaginalis? |
This
is an infection caused by an organism parasite called Trichomonas
Vaginalis. It is passed between sexual partners
or contacts and is found in the vagina and urethra.
| Have
I got the Trichomonas infection? |
Most
genital infections are silent. In some women the infections causes
an increased amount of watery and yellowish frothy discharge. It
is associated with some unpleasant odour and irritation on the vulva,
the external genitalia of the affected woman.
In
men the infection sometimes causes a discharge and pain when passing
urine. However, most infections with the Trichomonas
Vaginalis lack any symptoms.
| How
can I be investigated for Trichomonas Infection? |
If
you suspect you may have Trichomoniasis,
we will take swabs from the vagina and examine it under the microscope,
or send it for laboratory tests. Taking the swab is straight forward
and painless. For men, the sample is taken from the urethral opening
at the tip of the penis.
Treatment
is easy using an oral antibiotic, usually Metronidazole, as a single
dose.
