Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease or infection (STD, STI) through sexual contact and is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Gonorrhoea can be silent in a large proportion of infected people. In women, it may present with purulent discharge and pain on passing urine. The disease may spread higher up the genital tract, through the neck of the womb (cervix) into the tubes (fallopian tubes) and pelvis. When this stage is reached, the woman may present with lower abdominal pain, painful intercourse or painful periods.

For men, the condition usually presents with a thick purulent discharge from the penis and pain when passing urine. Complication can involve inflammation of the testis and the tubes from the prostate to the testicles. There may be pain and swelling.

The investigation involves taking a sample of the discharge from the urethra or cervix for tests in the laboratory. Technology is advancing very fast, and methods are changing as well. The tests we will employ will be latest to ensure that you have the most reliable result and in the shortest time possible.

Once the infection is confirmed, you will be prescribed an oral antibiotic usually as a single dose. This may have to be modified depending on your particular circumstances.

Consultation and investigations will be undertaken at the One Stop Clinics.

Consultation and treatment fees are agreed and set between One Stop Clinics and Insurance companies. If you are a self paying patient, you will receive a quotation at the outset. The cost is dependent on the number of visits you may require. There is a charge for consultations on top of treatment fees. All will be discussed in detail with you before you undergo any treatment.
